Are you Ready to Schedule a Documentary Family Photo Session?
FAMILY COMES FIRST - Recently, some of our United States family photojournalists have communicated their readiness to work with families who are able to carry on with their normal life and who want it documented. Family Photojournalist Association professional members offer a distinct and natural style of unobtrusive photography that will capture genuine, candid moments of you, your children, and even extended family enjoying time together...everyone gets in the pictures and you will likely forget the photographer is even there.
The purpose of documentary family photography is to tell a story — your story. You will be able to feel the love that you have for one another in the images. You will see the beauty that results when you are not posed or directed by your photographer to sit in a contrived position and smile on command at the camera. The FPJA has an abundance of top-ranked, North Carolina family photographers who are available right now. Find yours today!

In addition to a fine arts degree in photography, I have trained with world-renowned portrait and dance photographers from Australia to New York City. I have recently been featured in international publications such as Grace Ormonde, Bride Magazine and the Knot and have received numerous awards from The Wedding Photojournalist Association. In 2010 I wrote a book, "Diving Doggies: A Celebration of Play Underwater" and in 2014 "Shake, Rattle and Shoot: The Business of Baby Photography." In 2018 we released a book, "Pigwrecked," photographed by Brooke Mayo and Illustrated by Candace Owens.
Hi, I'm Sam: a photo-taking, baby-making, adventure-seeking mama + photographer. For my "Real Life Family" sessions, I prefer to ditch the park setting and capture your family as you REALLY ARE. I offer both "Breakfast" and "Bedtime" sessions, where I shadow your crew for a few hours either first thing in the morning, or last in the evening, to capture the details of your world and the moments that make up your days. Let's trade in the matching outfits on the beach for pajamas with a side of morning cuddles and teeth brushing, or dinner time chaos and bedtime stories. Or invite me along for your day at Disney or fishing in the Keys! Come home from vacation with a souvenir that really brings back the memories and keeps them for safe keeping. I'm a mother of two myself, and nothing we own means more to me then our family albums: easily the first thing I'd grab on the way out if the place was on fire. Those albums begin at birth, and there are few things like the honor of taking someone's very first portrait. I've had the joy of supporting women in labor and documenting the last leg of their journey to meeting their new babies. There's nothing like it. Before becoming parents, my husband and I specialized in destination wedding photography and have had the pleasure to document wedding celebrations all over the United States, the Bahamas, and into Europe. Beyond photography, I love being a mom and a wife, gardening, decorating, dancing, traveling, sewing, clean sheets, dinner parties, snow boarding, camping, IPAs, hiking, and that tingly feeling when you first get into a hot bath. I love great late-night conversations that dig deep, karaoke in dive bars where people are performing like they're on the verge of a midlife crisis, and the rush of Christmas mornings. And I'd love to connect with fresh families that dig my style and would like to document their families.
I'm a wedding photojournalist and documentary family photographer. I'm also an adventurous traveler and an all-round nerd. I love to hike and take selfies with my beagle/cattle dog Roux and my wife Sharon. I was born in Atlanta, moved around --21 cities and 5 states -- then came home. I listen to NPR, read the New York Times and The Washington Post and watch Netflix and Prime. My favorite series include Offspring, Derek, Atypical and Endeavor. Vita of a Nerd Photographer I photographed a biker funeral, death penalty protests and Ted Bundy while interning for the Associated Press. While a photographer for two dailies in Florida, I photographed Ronald Reagan, a train derailment and the dedication of a screened-in porch. An unexpected life turn took me to Vermont and on to Indiana, where I edited photos for a major daily, and nerded out getting a master’s and PhD. After teaching photojournalism in Florida, Indiana and Mississippi, I returned to Atlanta to earn my fifth degree--a Master's of Divinity. My passion for storytelling with my camera and my interest in religious diversity led my to the field of wedding photojournalism. I have documented weddings large and small, Hindu and Pagan, indoors and out, Christian and Muslim, in backyards and in churches. The most exotic wedding I have photographed took place in Mexico and was officiated by a Mayan shaman. You won’t find many Atlanta wedding photographers with the education, experience and caring personality that I have … a sense of humor and humility, too. :) When I'm not photographing weddings, portraits or corporate events, I work on personal photo projects, hang out at a tiny cabin in the mountains, work for racial justice and welcome refugees to our community.
My passion is the capture your favorite moments in life and tell the stories that surround them. Maybe your favorite moments are going on epic adventures and exploring new wonders with the family. Or maybe your favorite moments are playing the in the backyard with the kiddos. Or perhaps your favorite moments are the quite moments just before bedtime. It's in those favorite moments when your life truly happens—not in the uncomfortable (and sometimes stressful) staged photos you're probably used to. That's why I'm dedicated to providing a stress-free experience and authentic photographs that shine of who you are, and not just what you look like.
Joyce studied fine art and photography at Syracuse University in New York, London, England and Florence, Italy. An artist. A photojournalist. An educator. A mentor. A dancer. A thought partner. A soulful person. A real-life storyteller capturing moments as memorable visual stories. Often it’s the small moments, the wordless reactions, which carry the most power. She captures natural moments that tell the story of your family in a playful and artistic slice of life photo session. The focus is on everyday moments and interactions including connections while engaging with one another. Sessions take place at home or at an outdoor location in the San Francisco Bay Area or Mendocino.
