Are you Ready to Schedule a Documentary Family Photo Session?
FAMILY COMES FIRST - Recently, some of our United States family photojournalists have communicated their readiness to work with families who are able to carry on with their normal life and who want it documented. Family Photojournalist Association professional members offer a distinct and natural style of unobtrusive photography that will capture genuine, candid moments of you, your children, and even extended family enjoying time together...everyone gets in the pictures and you will likely forget the photographer is even there.
The purpose of reportage family photography is to tell a story — your story. You will be able to feel the love that you have for one another in the images. You will see the beauty that results when you are not posed or directed by your photographer to sit in a contrived position and smile on command at the camera. The FPJA has an abundance of top-ranked, Virginia family photographers who are available right now. Find yours today!

A fellow photographer once laughed and called me a "connoisseur of light." The laugh was for a photo of my kiddo's giggling face bathed in sunshine, with the toilet seat behind her head. I do love the way light can make the most mundane moment glorious. But there's more to a memorable photograph than that, and great light is not required. What's essential is authenticity. I look for those moments that show something real about a person or a relationship. A loving glance, a characteristic gesture, a flash of pure joy. Because in the end, do you want to remember what you looked like, or who you were?
One day I found myself between posed portraits, which I felt kind of faked and did not reflect my style, and documentary photography, which captures real family moments but sometimes feels too dark or too raw. So, I created my own style of photography. An unscripted relaxed photography, with a clean beautiful edit. I've been a professional photographer for several years and I have had the honor to be part of several family celebrations and special moments. Since the moment I transformed my business into documentary photography, I've never been happier. The individuals and families I photograph are more than clients, they are true connections, and I am privileged to be part of their lives. I’m truly lucky, I have the best customers, I really do!
My focus is on small moments between friends and lovers, the split seconds of joy, intimacy, and authenticity that deserve to be memories but are often missed by more classic photographers. I let my work provide a window into the most meaningful moments of your family and/or wedding, those that you’ll witness and those that you won’t, and I celebrate your journey beyond. As a photojournalist, I have won many international photo competitions, and have been selected for many collective exhibitions in Paris, Great Britain, and Finland. My personal work is an important part of my photography skills.
I love to photograph the freehearted, honest and unguarded moments. I try to capture joy. I also try to capture ‘realness’, which is not always picture-perfect. I prefer (I am more comfortable) shooting in natural light with limited posing and props. My passion is to photograph moments that go unnoticed, that may be overlooked. They may even be unpleasant. I believe one day you will want a record of what life really looked like for you, at that point in time. I am Australian living in the U.S. with my husband and two kids. When my kids moved out of diapers, I took a breath and picked up my husband's Nikon D90 and began, slowly, teaching myself manual photography. I was sick of photographing our family moments using Instagram. I wanted to have full control of the images I was creating. This was in 2015 and I still have so much to learn. I was born in Western Australia and have lived in Queensland, California, Tasmania to name a few places. I love people, I love experiencing life in different places and I love where we live now for all its diversity. Don't get me wrong, I would rather be on the coast somewhere, (think tropical), but I have learned to make the best of what you have. I have a strong accent and have been known to use Aussie phrases, so don't be afraid to ask me "What did you say?"
In addition to a fine arts degree in photography, I have trained with world-renowned portrait and dance photographers from Australia to New York City. I have recently been featured in international publications such as Grace Ormonde, Bride Magazine and the Knot and have received numerous awards from The Wedding Photojournalist Association. In 2010 I wrote a book, "Diving Doggies: A Celebration of Play Underwater" and in 2014 "Shake, Rattle and Shoot: The Business of Baby Photography." In 2018 we released a book, "Pigwrecked," photographed by Brooke Mayo and Illustrated by Candace Owens.
I've contemplated long and hard every single day since I've picked up a camera about why I do what I do and what motivates me. I think about what it means to me and about what it means to other people. There are a few reasons, some have changed, some haven't. The few that drives them all are human connection, relationships, and vulnerability. I feel I have a responsibility to photograph present reality for the sake of human history and future nostalgia. It is very easy for me to connect with people, whether it be my clients or a stranger on the street. I love knowing that through my chosen medium I am able to gain new perspectives of this life, one person at a time. I feel honored and blessed to be able to wake up every morning and tell stories through photographs.
